In her work as a clinical psychologist and licensed professional counselor, Dr. Garfinkel helps a person who is facing a difficult time in their life. Difficulties may include:

  • anxiety
  • stress
  • being bothered about feeling down
  • having low interest in things
  • struggling with relationships
  • self-esteem issues
  • feelings of grief/loss
  • adjusting to life transitions
  • adjusting to a new medical condition

The foundation of her approach is existential-humanistic which may include spiritual struggles or the exploration of life’s big questions, where pertinent. Through authenticity, genuineness, collaboration, and empathy, the person becomes able to identify areas of difficulty from their point of view.  Dr. Garfinkel believes that most people have the tools within themselves to make meaningful progress in therapy and, for most, problems in living can effectively be resolved through an outsider’s perspective and by drawing from the person’s inner perspective on their experiences.  The person suffering from trauma may become better able to move forward while also managing through lingering difficulties. Often, a person’s worries, stressors, or other symptoms affect functioning in the workplace, in social and family relationships, and in their physical health.

People learn to recognize behavior and thought patterns that interfere with everyday life, and ways in which they can learn skills to cope with and help manage stressors.  At times, value is found through exploration into the early roots of the person’s difficulties and then—together—think about the ways these earlier experiences have shaped their development and continue to affect their current outlook.  Dr. Garfinkel works to holistically create a warm, supportive, and judgment-free space for the person to include all aspects of their lives to help them reflect on their struggles and draw on their personal strengths to bring about change.
